What Is Gravel?
Gravel is a loose collection of rock fragments used for driveways, pathways, drainage systems, landscaping, foundations, and construction projects. It is commonly sold by cubic yard or by ton.
How Volume Is Calculated
For rectangular areas, gravel volume is calculated by multiplying length × width × depth. The result is converted into cubic yards for estimating material requirements.
Weight Estimation
Weight depends on the gravel type and density. Most gravel weighs between 95 and 120 pounds per cubic foot, allowing you to estimate truckloads and delivery requirements.
Waste Allowance
Adding a 5–15% waste factor accounts for settlement, compaction, uneven surfaces, and material loss during installation, ensuring enough gravel is ordered.
