Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) compares fat stored around the waist to fat stored around the hips. Fat carried around the waist ('apple shape') is more strongly linked to cardiometabolic risk than fat carried around the hips ('pear shape'), which is why WHR is used alongside — or instead of — BMI in some risk screenings.
